The world's best world music rock album 2007!?

Tinariwens latest album 'AMAN IMAN - Water is Life' has been chosen as one of the 10 best of 2007 by both UK rock magazine The Word and world music magazine Songlines. Tinariwen have just been voted Best African Band by none other than the bible of rock'n'roll, Rolling Stone (USA).

Also Tinariwen has been nominated in the Africa Category of the 2008 BBC Awards For World Music 2007. The band scooped top prize in this category back in 2005.

But what is world music anyway? Daily internet publication Pitchfork Media, which is focused on Independent Music and receives an audience of more than 240,000 readers per day, voted Tinariwen for one of the Top 50 Albums of 2007.

Graeme Thomson (The Word) is right when he calls Aman Iman '..a timely reminder of how thrilling rock music can be when you have little inkling of what it's going to do next...this is simply outstanding music - no "world" caveat required.'

Anyway, Tinariwen are thankful for anybody who likes and supports what they are doing - any type of award is welcome, the category doesnt matter..

Fanfare Ciocarlia im Gloria Theater

Sie sind wieder da - Fanfare Ciocârlia, die international führende Balkan Brass Band aus Rumänien! Am 03. April 2008 werden die Meister der Highspeed Blasmusik auf Trompeten, Hörnern, Klarinetten und der großen Pauke das Gloria Theater aufmischen!

Seit über zehn Jahren begeistern sie Menschen in aller Welt mit ihren rasanten Rhythmen.

2004 wirkten sie in Fatih Akins Spielfilm Gegen die Wand mit und auch Emir Kusturicas Filme sind geprägt von der Musik der Fanfare. Jüngst klopfte Hollywood an die Tür des Orchesters und beauftragt sie eine ganz eigene Coverversion von Born to be wild aufzuspielen. In ihrer Spielfreude und überbordenden Kreativität kombinieren sie traditionelle Tänze und Melodien mit dem James-Bond-Thema und anderen Standards der westlichen Welt.

Fanfare Ciocârlia machen Weltmusik ohne Schubladendenken. Ihre Liveperformance, die sowohl durch technische Brillanz als auch durch überwältigende Bühnenpräsenz besticht, ist absolut mitreißend.

Die neue CD Queens and Kings feiert die Harmonie der Unterschiede auf unserem Planeten und ist gleichzeitig das Testament von Ioan Ivancea, Fanfare Ciocarlias Senior-Klarinettisten, der im Oktober 2006 verstarb.

Der in diesem Jahr zum ersten Mal ausgelobte Internationale Friedensmusikpreis geht an die malische Band.

In der Begründung der Jury heißt es: Mit diesen Preisträgern kann das Musikland Niedersachsen bei der erstmaligen Verleihung eines Preises in dieser Kategorie ein Zeichen setzen, das die Internationalität und die Bedeutung des Preises unterstreicht. Die ehemaligen Tuareg-Kämpfer setzen sich mit ihrer Musik engagiert für den Frieden und die Völkerverständigung ein.

Haydamaky kommt..

Rising to fame in the days of the Orange Revolution, Haydamaky are now one of the most famous and beloved bands in the Ukraine. For their new CD "Kobazar" (Eastblok 2008)this wild men once again have dug deep into the musical heritage of ukrainian regions such as Bukovyna and Carpathian Mountains and and weave the old melodies into their songs. It's only consequent to add the bandura, the instrument of the Kobzars, to their vibrant folk ensemble of mandolin, trumpet, flute and accordion. But Haydamaky that's also rock 'n' roll ! They can rely on a solid backline of drums, bass and guitar. Their punk roots are still as evident as influences of Burning Spear and Black Uhuru. Their music live and on record is characterized by turbulent energy and a rollercoaster of tempo and moods. Even, if you don't understand the lyrics, you will be filled with the music from top to toe and feel the passion. Spivay!
