Orient Expressions (Istanbul)

turkish folk / electronica

The bands rich sonic status is achieved through electrophonic sensibilities as implemented by Dj Yakuza and Murat Uncuolu, who combine Turkish Folk / Alevi songs with instrumental substructures. The result is a well-integrated sound that moves through polyharmonic jazzy vibes and traditional darbuka percussion grooves. Cem Yldz approaches Turkish melodies with a fresh perspective, comfortably switching between the ud, cumbus, sazbus, and other baglama instruments.. more

Tinariwen - Winner of Praetorius Music Award

Award ceremony / August 22th / State Opera House Hannover

Lured into rebel training camps in Libya by Colonel Gadaffi in the early 1980s, Tinariwen became the official mouthpiece of the Touareg rebellion, and their songs carried the message of awareness and resistance to the far corners of the desert. All the founding members of the group took part in the Touareg rebellions in northern Mali and Niger in 1990.

Today Tinariwen are the ambassadors of one of the oldest and proudest people on earth. They play their music to teach us about the beauty of their desert home, the strength and dignity of the nomad and his way of life, and the problems of poverty, oppression and lack of development which continue to hamper their progress.

In 2005 Tinwariwen and Touareg band Terakaft created Taghreft Tinariwen, a trans-Saharan not-for-profit company with charitable aims to promote all aspects of Touareg culture and the economic and social development of the southern Sahara.

For their commitment Tinariwen will receive the Praetorius Music Award 2008 on August 22th in the State Opera House Hannover.

A very nice album & a very nice tour..

The Nigel Kennedy Quintet: A Very Nice Album (EMI, Juni 2008)

While Blue Note Sessions (EMI, 2006) focused on interpreting compositions from past masters of the jazz repertoire, for A Very Nice Album (EMI, June 2008) Kennedy steps to the fore as composer as well as improviser. He himself admits that "some people might not call all the songs I've written jazz", and he isnt afraid to test the term to destruction as the compositions roam from blues and bebop to ballads and bossa-nova, interspersed with an occasional blast of metal: "So you have some semi-rockish stuff and some blues-ish stuff, and I got into some latin styles because it leaves the melodic solos" with so much freedom. Beyond their recorded incarnations, the songs also serve as platforms for collective improvisation when the band play live. "Each number will probably be twice as long when we get onstage", says Kennedy. We look forward to a very nice tour!
